Sports Betting
Betting is the act of placing a wager on an event, often with money. It is a form of gambling that has been around for thousands of years, and it involves the risk of losing money or possessions. It is important to always bet responsibly.
Value betting is a strategy that attempts to maximise profits over the long term through finding opportunities where odds are mis-priced. This is done by calculating the true probability of an outcome occurring and then comparing this to the odds offered by the bookmaker. It is possible to make positive expected value bets with a small number of wagers, but it takes a large volume to achieve statistical significance due to variance in results.
A point spread is a handicap that incentivises bettors to place a wager on either the underdog or the favored team. For example, if the Giants are three-point favorites against the Cowboys, then betting on the Giants means giving up points (also known as ‘laying’). This means that the team must win by at least four points to cover the spread and make the bet a winner.
Totals bets, also known as Over/Under bets, are wagers that predict if both teams will combine for more (Over) or less than (Under) runs, goals and points than the total amount posted by oddsmakers. These bets can be made individually or as part of parlays, which pay out a higher amount if all of the bets are successful.
